Put results before process: Lamrock

The New Brunswick advocate says social services in the province need a revamp.

In his latest report, Kelly Lamrock said New Brunswick’s centralized, rule-based bureaucracy leads to costly, reactive crisis management.

The report suggests the provincial government needs to move to a service-provision model, treating NGOs as essential and equal partners.

He added community organizations have proven they can respond faster and often make decisions that are better-suited to on-the-ground needs.

The report includes recommendations and practical steps to reinvent the relationship between the government and non-profit sector.

That means creating true partnerships with those organizations and shifting away from measuring how many forms are filled out to measuring if lives were improved.

Lamrock said the province needs a system where something can be done that everyone knows needs to be done and make that the measure of effectiveness.

The full report can be read here.
