1940-2026

The passing of Bernette Elizabeth (nee Groom) Stewart, wife of the late Peter J. Stewart formerly of St. George NB and Pennfield NB, occurred at the Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews NB on August 12, 2026. Born in St. Stephen NB on July 8, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bernice (nee Logan) Groom.

A loving and devoted, wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and friend, Bernette is survived by her son, Craig Stewart (Jada); her daughter, Kerri Moore (Mike); grandchildren: Jude, Kieren and Rosalyn; several cousins including special cousin and friend, Gary Groom, who looked after her affairs for the last several years; and several friends.

Bernette was a teacher who taught in various locations including Pennfield and Saint John. Upon meeting her husband Peter, who was also a teacher, they wed on July 1, 1968 and with the arrival of her family, Bernette became a full-time homemaker. She loved the life her and Peter made at their home in Pennfield, and they later moved to Brunswick Court in St. George. She was a longtime member of the Christ Church (Anglican), Pennfield NB where she was an active member in the church choir. As of December 2021, Bernette called Passamaquoddy Lodge home, and the family would like to thank the staff of the Lodge for their care and kindness over the years.

Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (506-755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George NB. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 2:00 pm at the Christ Church (Anglican) Cemetery, Pennfield NB with Rev. Canon Caleb Twinamatsiko officiating. In Bernette’s memory, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Passamaquoddy Lodge Foundation, Christ Church (Anglican) or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
