A ratification vote will be held in December to name the next leader of the New Brunswick Green Party, but there’s a bit of a twist.
There will only be one name on the ballot.
Megan Mitton is the only registered contestant in the leadership race.
A second applicant was approved by the party last week, but Matt Toner decided to withdraw from the contest.
“When David decided to step aside, I was approached by some wonderful people from across the province to consider running. I was honoured and interested, and gave it a lot of thought. But it is a complex decision and, in the end, I decided it wasn’t the right time for me to put my name forward,” Toner said.
“But the Green Party will be in terrific hands with Megan. The people of New Brunswick will face real challenges in the years to come, and I’m looking forward to supporting Megan as the new leader.”
The leadership Convention will be held in Fredericton on December 5
That’s when Mitton will be confirmed as the new leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick.
“The Leadership Contest is already sparking healthy dialogue and new ideas about the future of the party and our province”, Dave Wagner, the chair of the Leadership Contest Committee, explained.
“Whether we have one contestant or ten, that’s exactly what we wanted this process to do.”
Mitton was first elected as an MLA for the riding of Memramcook-Tantramar in 2018, and was re-elected to the new riding of Tantramar in 2020.
She is the first woman elected as a Green MLA in New Brunswick history.
