First N.B. licensed long-term care home to be operated by a First Nation

Seniors from the Elsipogtog First Nation region will now receive long-term care closer to home.

The New Brunswick government announced on Thursday the first-ever licensed long-term care home to be operated by a First Nation.

It will have 60 beds and will be established on Graham Road in Five Rivers, near Elsipogtog.

Twenty-four beds will be for residents with mobility difficulties and challenges with other daily activities. Another 24 will support those with significant memory loss and with greater care needs; and 12 beds will provide full-time nursing care for people with more complex mobility and care needs.

“Taking care of our elders and people with disabilities is in our culture,” said Elsipogtog First Nation Chief Arren Sock. “The approval of a licence is an important step toward Mi’kmaq language as a foundation of care. It brings us closer to realizing a patient-care facility steeped in community culture delivered right here in Elsipogtog.”
