“This is Fire Prevention Week, and here’s a quick reminder from 98.1 Charlotte FM. Take a few minutes this week to check the smoke alarms in your home and make sure the whole family knows how to get out safely in an emergency. And here’s one we might not think about: don’t charge your phone or tablet on the bed or couch. Keep it on a hard, flat surface and use the charger that’s made for your device. A couple of simple precautions today can help keep your home and family safe.”

1. Check your smoke alarms
Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. It’s also a good time for families to review and practice their home fire escape plan.
2. Use the proper charger
Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and many other everyday items use lithium-ion batteries. Use the charger and cord supplied with the device or one specifically approved by the manufacturer.
3. Don’t charge your phone on the bed or couch
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, such as a table or desk. Soft surfaces like beds, couches and pillows can trap heat.
4. Unplug when it’s charged
Once the battery is fully charged, unplug the device rather than leaving it continually connected to the charger.
5. Know the warning signs
Stop using a battery-powered device if it becomes unusually hot, starts swelling or leaking, gives off a strange smell or smoke, or begins making popping or hissing noises.
6. Keep your way out clear
Don’t charge e-bikes, scooters or other large battery-powered equipment where they could block a doorway or an escape route. When possible, the Saint John Fire Department recommends charging larger items such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outdoors.
