Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer after surgery

Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery in Rome.

The Vatican disclosed the diagnosis in a medical bulletin following the operation at Gemelli Hospital.

Doctors removed the lower lobe of the 71-year-old pope’s right lung after tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma.

His lead surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, and personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, said the operation was successful and there were no complications.

The Vatican says Leo spent a peaceful night in hospital and is expected to remain there for about a week.

His public engagements have been cancelled through October 20.
