Major clean energy investment for upgrades in Mactaquac and Salisbury

The federal government is investing nearly $270 million in New Brunswick’s electricity system, including a $50 million project in Salisbury that local officials say will improve power reliability and support future growth.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced funding that includes a $219 million Canada Infrastructure Bank loan for NB Power’s Mactaquac Life Achievement Project and $50 million from Natural Resources Canada for a major grid upgrade at the Salisbury Terminal.

“Building a stronger, more sustainable Canada starts with how we power our communities, homes, and businesses. By investing in clean electricity and modernizing key assets like the Mactaquac Generation Station, we are strengthening New Brunswick’s energy system, creating the conditions for investment in the province and positioning Canada for long-term competitiveness, while creating new jobs and reducing emissions,” said Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

President and Chief Executive Officer for NB Power Lori Clark said the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project is one of the most important investments they can make in New Brunswick’s energy future.

“Rehabilitating the existing generating station is the best option to preserve a critical source of renewable electricity and ensure Mactaquac continues to provide dependable power for decades to come.”

Upgrades at high-voltage transmission substation in Salisbury

The Static Synchronous Compensator project at the Salisbury Terminal will strengthen southern New Brunswick’s electricity system.

NB Power says the technology will improve grid stability in southern New Brunswick and help accommodate growing electricity demand and additional renewable energy sources.

Salisbury Mayor Rob Campbell welcomed the investment, saying residents should benefit from a more reliable power supply.

“The technology will enhance reliability, keep power flowing consistently and support the continued growth in the region,” Campbell said.

He said the upgrade will strengthen voltage support and help the electrical system better withstand disruptions.

“In other words, it will operate more reliably,” Campbell said. “More reliability for our residents and keep the power flowing.”

The broader federal funding announcement also supports NB Power’s efforts to extend the lifespan of the Mactaquac Generating Station, the province’s largest renewable energy asset. The 672-megawatt hydroelectric facility supplies about 30 per cent of New Brunswick’s renewable electricity needs and 20 per cent of peak demand.

The loan will help fund engineering studies, environmental reviews, Indigenous engagement and planning activities as NB Power works to rehabilitate the aging generating station and extend its operating life to 100 years.
