Liberal Minority To Unveil Throne Speech

The Trudeau government will unveil a throne speech Wednesday which is expected to outline how Canada will recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The speech will touch on the continuing health challenges facing the country and how to rebuild the economy.

Reports are suggesting a strategy for electric cars will be announced.

Spending is also likely for vaccines, more COVID-19 testing and containing local outbreaks of the virus.

Not all M-P’s will be returning to the House of Commons – Conservative leader Erin O’Toole and Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves Francois Blanchet are self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.

A virtual vote on the speech may be held and this is a test of confidence for the Trudeau government.

Governor General Julie Payette will deliver the throne speech at 2 o’clock on Wednesday.

The federal speech from the throne is anticipated to be a bold plan to help rebuild the Canadian economy amid COVID-19.

The prime minister has said dealing with the pandemic is job one.

Justin Trudeau noted how COVID-19 has revealed weaknesses in society, gaps in the social safety net and said some are falling through the cracks.

A long term vision is likely which includes spending on child care, long-term care, affordable housing along with a pledge to stimulate a green recovery.

With a federal deficit approaching $400 billion, some opposition members want to see the spending curtailed.

This will be a test of confidence for the Trudeau government which is 15 seats shy of a majority.

The throne speech will be delivered at 2 o’clock this afternoon by Governor General Julie Payette.
