5 cats rescued after Lower West Side apartment fire

Five cats were rescued from a multi‑unit apartment fire on Saint John’s Lower West Side.

The Saint John Firefighters Association said 20 firefighters from stations across the city responded to the call on Sunday.

Crews from Engine 6, Engine 1, Ladder Tower 1, Ladder 5 and Engine 7 were sent to the scene.

Firefighters said the first crew arrived to find black smoke coming from the rear of the building.

Fire crews knocked down the flames and began searching the units.

During that search, crews rescued five cats.

One of the cats needed immediate medical attention, and the association said firefighters used a pet oxygen mask to give the little one oxygen.

The cat was later reported to be in stable condition.

The apartment sustained damage, but no other injuries were reported, according to Saint John Firefighters.
