Wolastoquey chiefs sent condolences to the family of a 26-year-old indigenous woman on Friday.
Chantel Moore was shot by police during a wellness check at her apartment in Edmundston early Thursday.
A release from the Wolastoquey nation points out the unequal legal treatment towards indigenous people, particularly indigenous women and children.
The chiefs called for a full independent review of Moore’s death.
The statement goes on to say they will next push for a committee to review systemic discrimination in the province’s justice system.
“We demand that the provincial government immediately set up a Committee to review the justice system in New Brunswick and make recommendations on how the Province can affect change to allow for a system free of systemic discrimination, and that no longer fails to serve the Indigenous people of this province,” the statement reads.
The chiefs say they next plan to contact the Minister of Public Safety and Minister of Justice.
