Water Cooler Talk (October 19 – October 25)

Here’s 5 interesting things you can talk about this week with your family, friends and co-workers

1: The First Community Cemetery in St. George, established in 1784 by town founder Captain Peter Clinch, served as an inter-denominational burial ground for early settlers and Loyalists (including Colonel Hugh McKay and Captain Clinch himself) until it reached capacity in 1876.

2: Though they strongly resemble daisies, asters – which continue to bloom late into the fall, are actually members of the sunflower family. Their signature yellow center is a complex cluster of tiny mini-flowers called “flowerets”.

3: Orionids meteor shower begins to peak during mid-October. It is famous for producing fast, bright meteors and fireballs left behind by debris from Halley’s Comet!

4: Pancakes are one of the oldest human foods, with evidence of stone-age grain patties dating back more than 30,000 years.

5: Ray Bradbury’s dystopian classic ‘Fahrenheit 451’ (published on October 19, 1953) and C.S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy novel ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ (published on October 16, 1950) stand among the most famous and enduring books ever released in the month of October.
