EXCLUSIVE VINTAGE VIDEO: Lake Utopia in the 1950’s

For well over a century, Charlotte County residents have spent their summers on Lake Utopia, just outside of St. George. Some spend their summers on the sandy shores, others on the water. While others still, take up more permanent residence every summer in the camps and cottages that dot the perimeter of the lake. For some, generations of their family have occupied these places – and visiting has been a summer tradition since childhood.

This is the case for the Clinch family, who’s had a camp on the lake for over 70 years! Lovingly referred to as “The Cedar Chest“.

“For us, the Cedar Chest on Lake Utopia was the place to be in the summer. My Mom & Dad built the camp in 1952/53 and it became the go-to place for friends and relatives near and far. The boats hardly stopped. Water skiing, fishing, running into St. George via the river for groceries. Late night cruises, teenage romances, going to the movies. Bonfires on the beach, roasting marshmallows and hot dogs.” says Bob Clinch. “Memories that are etched in my very being. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Another generation of the family are now making their own memories at the Cedar Chest!”
