Two surgeons hired at Upper River Valley Hospital

A significant milestone for Horizon Upper River Valley Hospital.

Two more general surgeons have been hired through ongoing recruitment efforts, marking the first time in ten years all three general surgery positions at the hospital have been filled.

Both surgeons will be trained for emergency and elective caesarean sections (C-section) to help build capacity to support the ongoing delivery of labour and birth services.

In a media release, Horizon says this represents an important step toward addressing staffing pressures that have contributed to temporary diversion in that department.

C-section coverage requires trained surgical and anesthesia teams to be available when needed.

Chief of Staff, Fredericton and Upper River Valley area Dr. Martha Mills says the milestone “reflects the dedicated efforts of our leaders, recruitment teams and community partners.”

“I would particularly like to recognize Dr. Liam Hickey, chief of surgery, for the leadership he provided throughout this recruitment effort,” says Mills.

She says it having all three positions filled provides consistent care and builds a stronger foundation for birth and labour services for years to come.

Horizon is actively recruiting anesthesia an operating room trained nursing professionals.
