Sea Dogs add assistant coach to staff

As the offseason continues, the Saint John Sea Dogs continue to put together their coaching staff for the coming season.

The team announced Thursday that they’d hired Daniel Nikandrov as an assistant coach.

Nikandrov joins head coach Jim Hulton’s staff after two years as an assistant with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

“I’m looking forward to integrating into the community, working with a highly talented group of players and pushing for a championship with a renowned coaching staff,” Nikandrov said in a statement.

Sea Dogs president and general manager Trevor Georgie said the team is happy to welcome Nikandrov.

“He came highly recommended as a player’s coach who builds strong relationships and connects well with young athletes,” Georgie said in a statement.

“Having served as a captain during his OHL career, he understands what it takes to compete at this level.”

Before his time in the OHL, Nikandrov spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the U Sports level – three with the York University Lions and one with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men.

As a player, Nikandrov played four seasons in the OHL, from 2012-13 to 2015-16, mostly with the Sarnia Sting. He served as an assistant captain and captain with the sting, before finishing his major junior career with the Peterborough Petes.

He followed his OHL time up with three seasons at York University before beginning his coaching career.
