Patient safety, quality of care at heart of new legislation

The Holt government introduced legislation this week aimed at improving patient safety and quality of care in New Brunswick’s health-care system.

Health Minister John Dornan said patient safety isn’t the responsibility of just one person or organization.

“It is a reflection of how the entire system works together,” the minister said in a statement.

“These amendments will help ensure we learn from patient safety incidents, share that knowledge, and take action to prevent them from happening again.”

A release from the Department of Health said some key elements of the legislation are:

  • Clearer definitions for patient safety incidents
  • Improved processes for reviewing serious incidents
  • Expanded opportunities for joint reviews between health-care organizations
  • Enhanced used of data to identify trends and guide improvements

It would also establish a provincial advisory committee on quality of care and patient safety.
