N.B. education assessments show decrease in some results

Results of last year’s provincial assessments show some stability in the anglophone education sector, despite some declining success rates.

The Department of Education said reading assessments in Grades 4 and 6 show a decrease in the number of students who achieved an appropriate level.

Just under 58 per cent of Grade 4 students met the standard, down from 60.5 per cent the year before.

In Grade 6, the rate dropped from 78 per cent to 76 per cent.

Education Minister Claire Johnson said the focus is on improving student outcomes.

She added the results reinforced the government’s focus on strong basics in the classroom and removing distractions so students can focus on learning.

The Grade 9 English proficiency assessment produced nearly identical results year-over-year.

Math results in Grades 5 and 7 were down, with about 50 per cent of students in both grades achieving appropriate success or higher.

The full results for the Anglophone sector can be found here.
