‘Major’ fire at Charlotte County landfill under control

No injuries have been reported after flames broke out at the landfill in Charlotte County.

Firefighters were called to the Hemlock Knoll Landfill in Lawrence Station on Thursday evening.

Five departments responded to the “major” fire, according to the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission.

“The stubborn fire is currently under control due to everyone’s resolution to fight but remain calm and professional,” the commission said in a Facebook post on Thursday morning.

While the cause is not yet known, the commission said lithium batteries are the number one cause of landfill fires.

They sent out a reminder to residents not to throw batteries in with their regular garbage.
