Horizon Health making it easier to heal the mind and spirit

A new initiative from Horizon Health is making it easier for patients to request spiritual care.

The program means different faith and cultural leaders can be called on to provided something not available through medicine.

Posters are being placed around Horizon hospitals that include a QR code.

Patients can scan the code and access a form they can fill out to request a visit from a religious or other faith or cultural leader.

According to Horizon president and CEO Margaret Melanson, this will create a consistent system across hospitals.

“We are emphasizing the support available to our patients and ensuring that our staff as well are equipped to help patients access the supports they need,” Melanson said.

Melanson said healing can often be about more than just medical care.

“For many people, religious, spiritual, indigenous, or cultural beliefs and practices are an essential part of overall well-being and healing, especially when experiencing illness or hospitalization,” she said.

The program is currently available in five Horizon hospitals around New Brunswick.
