Lots of support in Grand Manan this week, after the tragic loss of two youth in a car crash.
RCMP say an 18-year-old woman and her 21-year-old man died on Saturday after their vehicle left Route 776 in Woodwards Cove and crashed into a wooded area.
Mayor Bonnie Morse says with a population of only around 2600 people, they’re a small, tight-knit village, and most knew them. “They were both young; they were just starting their lives and just had so much potential. And, you know, it’s just an incredibly sad time for their families and their friends here on the island.”
Support services from the school district and the village office have been organized over the past few days for those who need it.
“We keep hearing how everybody’s trying to reach out, checking in on people, checking in on the first responders, checking in on the families, the friends and just trying to gather when they can and to make sure that, you know, everybody is coming through this as best they can. Grand Manan is a special place to live anytime. But in situations like this, there’s really nowhere else I’d rather be,” Morse expressed.
According to Hunter Green’s obituary, he was smart, quick-minded, capable and a hard worker. It adds he will be remembered as ‘A loving son, a protective big brother, a devoted boyfriend, a loyal friend and a gentle giant who cared deeply for his family and friends.’
In Sidney Urquhart’s obituary, she was described as a ‘spirited young woman whose love of life infected everyone fortunate enough to know her, who had a larger-than-life personality.’
