Two levels of government will invest in a new early learning and child-care facility in Eastern Charlotte.
The federal and provincial governments announced they would invest $1.42 million in a new facility in the St. George district of Eastern Charlotte.
Working with the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, the municipality will build a 576-square-metre (6,200-square-foot) facility within the J.O. Spinney community complex.
The project will create 52 designated child-care spaces, including six for infants and 46 for preschool children ages two to five.
It will also relocate 30 existing after-school spaces, for a total of 82.
“This announcement is Eastern Charlotte investing in our children, supporting young families and local businesses, strengthening our community, and building a stronger future for everyone,” said Mayor John Craig.
The total cost of the project is $2.32 million, with the province providing $920,000 through the Regional Development Corporation and $500,000 from the federal government as part of the Canada-New Brunswick Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.
The YMCA will operate the child-care centre and fundraise $250,000 for equipment and furnishings.
“Access to quality childcare helps children build a strong foundation and gives parents the support they need to work and provide for their families,” said Shilo Boucher, president and CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick.
The project also involves the relocation of the community skate park to create a multi-use community hub around the new facility.
