The East Coast Games is marking its 10th anniversary, drawing athletes and families from across Atlantic Canada each year.
Organizers said more than 2,200 participants from across the region took part in this year’s events, including athletes, coaches and officials.
Seventeen sports were held at venues throughout Greater Saint John, such as the Qplex, Canada Games Stadium, the UNB Saint John Athletics Centre, the new Knapper Centre, local schools and several community fields and rinks.
Swimming received the Celebration Cup this year.
It’s an annual award presented to the sport that best demonstrates teamwork, sportsmanship, volunteerism and community spirit.
“This event continues to demonstrate the power of sport to bring communities together,” the organizing committee said in a statement.
“We’re proud to celebrate ten years of competition and community spirit.”
Organizers said the games generated an estimated economic impact of nearly $500,000 for the region.
This year’s event honoured former director Dave “Mac” McPherson as the In Memoriam Honorary Chair, recognizing what organizers describe as his lasting contributions to the Games.
The committee also welcomed Honorary Chair Tommy McGrattan, who spent time meeting athletes, volunteers and families.
