Curbside Recycling Coming For Local Service Districts

Fundy region local service districts (LSDs) will soon offer residents curbside recycling pickup.

The Fundy Regional Service Commission has announced a curbside recycling program will be offered across 10 LSDs beginning in July.

Districts that will offer the program include: Musquash, Petersville, Westfield West & East, Greenwich, Kingston, Rothesay, Simonds, Fairfield, St. Martins, and Hampton.

Each household in participating LSDs will receive a green and blue bin to sort household recycling.

When the program begins, the bins will be collected biweekly, just like compost collection for those areas.

“People are then receiving a full diversion program right at their doorstep,” said Brenda MacCallum, public relations and program development officer with the commission. “We see it as a fantastic program.”

MacCallum also pointed out a pilot project in Saint John testing the feasibility of curbside recycling pickup in the city.

She believes the change, which eliminates the need for the larger communal blue bins, will make life easier for residents, but that’s not the only benefit.

“The other piece is, the material that comes in is of much cleaner quality when it’s picked up curbside,” MacCallum said.

The larger blue bins will close permanently in August.

Garbage, compost, and recycling pick-up schedules can be viewed for the participating LSDs using the FundyRecycles app.

The full breakdown of what can be recycled can be found on the Fundy Regional Service Commission website.
