Bears spotted in St. Stephen, public asked to stay away

A dangerous animal alert was issued Monday afternoon by the Municipal District of St. Stephen.

Officials said a mother bear and her cub were spotted in the Milltown area. A second cub had also been seen along Milltown Boulevard.

“Interactions with untamed animals can cause bites, scratches, bruises, infectious diseases, damage to vehicles or belongings, severe injuries and potentially death,” said the alert.

“Mother bears can be especially [aggressive] if you get between them and their cubs.”

The alert will remain in effect until the animal is no longer a threat. Municipal officials said the public should not call 911 for information or updates.
