A young student took on a big role in Saint John, proudly serving as the city’s “Chief for a Day.”
Twelve-year-old Favour Ayoade was officially sworn in on Wednesday during a morning ceremony at Saint John Police Headquarters.
The honour is part of a tradition held during National Police Week, which ran from May 11 to 17 this year.
Students between the ages of five and 12 were invited to submit a one-page essay answering the question:
“Tell us about your hero and the positive impact they have on your life.”
Ayoade’s thoughtful response earned her the top spot, though she didn’t expect to win.
“When I first saw it and wanted to try for it, my friend was like, ‘It’s no use, you’re not going to win,’” Ayoade said after being sworn in.
“But I said I wanted to just try for fun, and I ended up winning.”
Ayoade got a police uniform to wear, toured police headquarters, and learned what it’s like to serve with the force.
“I’m really happy to be here,” she said. “It’s like a privilege that most people don’t get.”
The idea of policing runs in the family. Ayoade says her grandfather served before he passed, and she hopes to follow in his footsteps.
The program began in 2019 as a way to connect young people with local policing in the city.
