Assault at Renous prison sends inmate to hospital

An inmate at the federal prison in Renous was taken to hospital after an assault inside the facility.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said the incident happened on Aug. 4, and staff evaluated the inmate before transporting the person to an outside hospital for treatment.

CSC reported that the inmate has since returned to the maximum‑security prison.

The Blackville detachment of the RCMP and the institution are investigating the assault, according to CSC.

The agency added that the person responsible has been identified and that actions have been taken. No staff members or other inmates were hurt.

CSC will review the circumstances of the incident as part of its efforts to prevent similar cases in the future.
