Health-care spending has been a top priority for Susan Holt at the Council of the Federation.
New Brunswick’s premier said the intent under the Health Transfer Act was for a 50-50 split between the province and the federal government.
“Today, the country’s portion is down to 21 per cent,” she said. “We need to see that come back up because the needs are greater.”
Holt said New Brunswick’s population has serious health concerns.
“We have a population that is older than the rest of the country and experiences higher levels of chronic disease,” she said.
The premier said the needs must be met.
“We cannot grow our economy and invest in our defence sector and improve all of our energy offerings without that healthy workforce,” Holt said.
“That requires the federal government to contribute at the same level as the provinces.”
