Impaired driver arrested after speeding through fire scene

A 22‑year‑old man has been arrested after driving into a closed fire scene on Westfield Road.

Saint John police said officers had blocked both ends of the road on July 12 at about 4:42 p.m. to allow fire crews to work safely.

Police reported that a passenger car sped through the closed-off area and almost hit a parked police car and some fire trucks that were on the scene.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and investigated.

Police said the man was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

His driver’s licence was suspended for three months, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

He was also issued several violations under New Brunswick’s Motor Vehicle Act.

Police are reminding motorists to obey road closures and use caution around emergency scenes to protect first responders and the public.
