Hot and humid weather is expected to continue across much of New Brunswick today, according to Environment Canada.
The agency said humidex values near 40 degrees Celsius will persist over most of the province until about 7 p.m., except along parts of the Fundy coast where cooler conditions are expected.
Maximum temperatures could reach between 30 and 34 degrees Celsius, with humidity pushing the humidex to between 36 and 40.
The agency reported that conditions will begin to ease from north to south tonight and Saturday, although southern New Brunswick may still reach highs near 30 degrees on Saturday despite lower humidity.
Overnight temperatures are expected to stay near 20 degrees.
Environment Canada said people should check on older adults, those living alone and others who may be at higher risk of heat illness.
Early signs of heat exhaustion can include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue, and recommends stopping activity and drinking water if symptoms appear.
Heat stroke is described as a medical emergency. Symptoms can include red and hot skin, confusion, dizziness, nausea or a change in consciousness.
The agency advises moving the person to a cool place, removing extra clothing and applying cold water or ice packs while waiting for medical attention.
Environment Canada also recommends drinking water often, closing blinds or shades, using fans or air conditioning and moving to a cooler public space if a home is too hot.
