A Brief History of Elmsville

Part of the Saint Patrick Parish (named for Saint Patrick of Ireland), which also includes St. George and Saint Andrews), Elmsville is one of the smallest rural communities in Charlotte County, with a population of only 56 according to a 2023 census. Despite this, its history dates back to at least the early 1800’s, with the population being listed at around 150 residents around the turn of the century. The area also had a post office in operation from 1866 to 1871.

Comprising picturesque countryside, the area is popular with many for hunting and fishing, with a section of the Digdeguash River flowing through its center. Elmsville is characterized by its covered bridge, called the McGuire Covered Bridge, which was built in 1913. Under the bridge is a popular swimming, paddling and fishing area, with the water in the summer at an average temperature of around 16 degrees celsius. There are at least 8 species of fish in the river, including Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, Brook Trout and Yellow Perch.

Elmsville is also home to 2 churches dating back to the early 1900’s, as well as a small cemetery. Many grave markers in the cemetery date back to the mid to late 1800’s, with the oldest passing date on a stone being 1835. There are over 235 people interred there. In 1986, the community came together and created the Elmsville Volunteer Fire Department. Elmsville is also home to the Elmsville Hatchery. A pipeline carrying natural gas can also be found within the perimeter of Elmsville.
