People often ask what matters most when choosing a Realtor. They expect me to list the usual traits—trustworthy, honest, diligent, available—and yes, all of those are absolutely essential. But if you ask me what really sets a great Realtor apart from the rest, my answer is simple: a natural-born problem solver.
If you know me, you’ve probably heard the running joke among my friends and family: “Don’t tell Ray you’re looking for something unless you’re prepared to be spammed to death.” It’s funny because it’s true—I can’t help myself. If someone needs something, I’m already searching, researching, networking, and connecting dots before they even finish the sentence. To me, solving problems isn’t just part of the job—it’s who I am.
And in real estate, that instinct matters more than most people realize.
And in real estate, that instinct matters more than most people realize.
Over the years, I’ve had clients’ movers not show up on closing day. I’ve had last-minute plumbing leaks, lockouts, landscaping emergencies—you name it, I’ve handled it. I’m always honored when I am the first call my clients make in those moments. It means they trust me, and more importantly, they know they can count on me.
That level of trust doesn’t come from showing homes or writing contracts. It comes from showing up—every time, in every situation.
I keep a contact list on my phone that I joke is better than some small business directories. Electricians, plumbers, cleaners, movers, locksmiths, roofers, inspectors—if there’s a solution to be found, I’m already dialing. My job doesn’t end with a signed contract; that’s actually where a lot of the real work begins.
To me, being a great problem solver naturally leads to all the other traits a Realtor should have. When you’re committed to finding solutions, you become more dependable, more proactive, more honest, and more prepared. You anticipate problems before they happen. You listen better, communicate better, and advocate harder for your clients.
So yes, choose an agent who is trustworthy. Choose someone honest and diligent. Absolutely choose someone who is available. But above all, choose someone who can solve problems—big or small—without hesitation.
Because in this business, it’s not a matter of if issues will arise, but when. And when they do, you want someone who doesn’t just tell you everything will be okay—you want someone who makes sure of it.
