UPD: Fire destroys boat at St. Andrews wharf

A tough fight for the St. Andrews volunteer fire department in snowy conditions.

Fire Chief Kevin Theriault says crews responded to a call for a boat fire at the town wharf on Wednesday, December 3, at around 3:10 pm.

“Once on scene, they found a Hybrid fishing boat on fire, with the batteries in apparent thermal runaway. Crews remained on scene until the fire was declared out, and there were no injuries,” Theriault stated in an email to our newsroom.

The boat then sank.

Theriault says that crews were called back later in the evening for oil leaking from the submerged boat. Absorbent floating booms were placed around the boat, and the Canadian Coast Guard, Department of Environment and Transport Canada were called to the scene.

The boat was brought to the surface and was being hauled away to be demolished.
