Local Municipalities See Higher Tax Bases

Numbers released by the province show St. Stephen’s tax base increased by 4.98 per cent over the past year.

That is a marked jump from last year when the town saw an increase of just 2.2 per cent.

The town will receive $1.7 million in grants from the province in 2022, according to the numbers.

Last week, the province reported that the assessed value of all properties jumped by 7.7 per cent year-over-year, the highest increase in 20 years.

Elsewhere, St. George’s tax base grew by 7.91 per cent from the 1.5 per cent figure reported last year. It will receive just $94,123 in grants.

The tax base in Saint Andrews increased by 10.99 per cent, up from 1.1 per cent last year, and the town will get $58,534 in grants.

Grand Manan, which will receive $233,341 in grants, saw its tax base jump by 5.51 per cent compared to 1.1 per cent.

No municipality in the province saw its tax base drop over the past year.
