Ice fishers are being asked to get their shelters off provincial waterways.
The government of New Brunswick is asking for all shelters to be removed.
Shelters in the south including the counties of Albert, Carleton, Charlotte, Kings, Queens, Saint John, Sunbury, Westmorland and York must be removed before March 8. Shelters in the counties of Kent, Gloucester, Madawaska, Northumberland, Restigouche and Victoria must be removed before March 15th in the north.
While ice fishing season is open until March 31, the warmer weather brings the possibility of garbage and debris dropping into the waterways.
“With warmer weather this season it is important to proceed with caution,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gary Crossman.
“We urge owners of ice-fishing structures to keep monitoring the conditions.”
Signs will also be posted at popular ice fishing locations to remind residents.
Structures and any garbage or debris must be removed to avoid causing an environmental hazard by having possible waste and debris in the province’s waterways.
The removal order is according to Section 15 (7) of the Water Quality Regulation of the Clean Environment Act.
