Kennebecasis Regional Police Force officers have begun their yearly policing standards training.
The provincially-mandated course includes use of force and firearm training.
Insp. Anika Becker says this year they wanted to extend the training to a full week to offer courses and topics not required by the province.
“Our purpose behind that was to try and enhance and build on the training they already get,” she said. “We wanted to spend more time on use of force, de-escalation and those types of things. Doing a full week makes that possible.”
Among the topics included in this year’s training are courses on coping with trauma, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and ethics training.
This year, officers will also participate in a virtual reality course developed by Axon, the company that outfitted the force with its body cameras.
“(Officers are given) a scenario and they have to make decisions based on the scenario,” Becker said of the training.
